CYBERSECURITY: How to Successfully Collaborate Remotely

Would you like to return to the office every day? In the global workforce study “Hopes and Fears 2022,” published at the end of May 2022, international consulting firm PwC asked 52,000 employees across 44 countries exactly this question. The result could not have been clearer: 19 out of 20 employees answered “no.” In Germany, for example, 35% of employees want to continue working fully remotely or from home, while 51% would prefer to do so most of the time. The future of work is hybrid. Younger generations in particular place great value on a flexible and motivating work environment that provides sufficient freedom for personal interests. OEDIV SecuSys GmbH supports organizations in creating secure conditions for modern, flexible working environments.
Remote Workspace

The PwC study also highlighted several shortcomings: Germany is significantly behind the international average when it comes to the major trend of remote work / working from home. While 54% of employees worldwide have access to this option, the figure in Germany is only 44%. There is also a clear need for improvement in promoting diversity and inclusion as well as adopting innovative future technologies.

According to Petra Justenhoven, Manager at PwC Germany, the solution lies in responsible and trust-based leadership: “This includes understanding the needs of the team, being willing to continuously learn, and above all, remaining open to new situations.”

The fact is: after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the way we work together has fundamentally changed. Secure and effective collaboration in the Modern Workplace involves many different aspects—from integration into existing IT environments and the provision of applications, data storage, and access rights to licensing, operations, support, and maintenance.

IT Security Assessment zur ersten Orientierung

In addition to the technical and organizational requirements of each company, security aspects must also be considered when establishing external access to corporate servers.

A recommended first step is to conduct an independent and objective security analysis through an IT Security Assessment. This helps identify risks and enables organizations to systematically evaluate gaps between their current security posture and their desired target state.

The fact that secure and needs-based remote access to all relevant business applications and corporate data is still not a given is demonstrated by a study conducted by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) on “IT Security in Home Offices in 2020.”

The BSI identifies the following technical security measures as particularly important for the modern digital workplace:

  • VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • Data encryption
  • Multi-factor authentication
  • Network segmentation and protection
  • Mobile Device Management

One significant security gap remains mobile devices. Only 38% of surveyed organizations manage the security of smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other mobile devices connected to the corporate network.

IT Security Requires a 360-Degree Perspective

More than ever, the new hybrid working environment requires a comprehensive, cross-functional security strategy.

Effective IT security requires a 360-degree view of:

  • People
  • Processes and organization
  • Technology
Prävention, Detektion, Reaktion

The requirements for suitable solutions within a comprehensive IT security strategy are as diverse as the organizations that implement them.
