Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) - Securely Manage Customer Identities and Improve the Customer Experience

With Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM), we create secure and user-friendly authentication processes for customer portals, online services, and digital business models.

Secure and Convenient Management of Digital Customer Identities

Customers today expect simple and secure access to digital services. Registration, login, password management, and access to personal data should be as straightforward as possible – while organizations must also take data protection, security, and regulatory requirements into account.

Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) brings these requirements together. It provides structures for managing customer identities and enables secure, convenient access to digital applications and services.

CIAM

What Is Customer Identity & Access Management?

CIAM focuses on identities outside the traditional employee organization. These include customers, partners, members, or users of digital platforms, for example. Typical functions include:

  • Registration and management of customer identities
  • Secure authentication
  • Single Sign-on
  • Self-service functions
  • Consent and preference management
  • Access control
  • Integration of digital applications and portals
  • Support for data protection and compliance requirements

CIAM must therefore combine two objectives: a high level of security and the simplest possible user experience.

Challenges in Practice

Customers today expect fast registration, convenient login options, and secure handling of their personal data. At the same time, organizations must reliably protect identities, comply with data protection requirements, and manage a growing number of digital services.

Different login procedures, a lack of self-service functions, or complex registration processes often result in abandoned registrations and increased support effort.

What We Can Do for You

CIAM Is More Than a Login

A professional CIAM concept is about more than authentication. It covers the entire lifecycle of a customer identity and must be integrated into an organization’s digital processes.

This is particularly important for organizations with multiple portals, applications, or digital business models, where centralized and consistent management of customer identities is essential.

What Is CIAM?
Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) manages the digital identities of customers, partners, and other external users: registration, login, authentication, consent, and profile data for customer portals, online shops, and digital services. Unlike internal Identity & Access Management, CIAM must serve very large numbers of users without requiring training, minimize registration drop-offs, and technically support the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for consent and data access.
Internal Identity & Access Management (IAM) manages employees whose identities originate from the HR system and whose access rights are assigned through a role model. Customer Identity & Access Management (CIAM) manages customers and business partners who register themselves, maintain their own data, and expect a seamless experience from the outset. IAM focuses on governance and least privilege, while CIAM focuses on scalability, user experience, consent management, and fraud prevention. We advise on both and ensure that customer and employee identities remain clearly separated.
Self-service registration, Single Sign-on across brands and channels, multi-factor and passwordless authentication with passkeys, login through existing third-party accounts, consent and preference management in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), progressive profile enrichment, fraud detection, and interfaces to customer management, e-commerce, and marketing automation systems. For business-to-business portals, delegated administration can be added, allowing partner organizations to manage their own users. We determine which functions you actually need before selecting a platform.
Customer Identity & Access Management technically implements requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): consents are stored in a granular and versioned manner with timestamps (Article 7), users can view, modify, export, and delete their data (Articles 15 to 20), and access to customer data is logged. Because identity and consent data are managed centrally, the need to reconcile data between the online shop, customer management system, and newsletter tool is eliminated – a common source of data protection violations in customer-facing processes.
CIAM becomes relevant as soon as an organization operates multiple digital customer channels or needs to manage large numbers of external users: insurers and banks with customer portals, energy providers with customer accounts, retailers with online shops and apps, industrial companies with dealer or service partner portals, and healthcare providers with patient portals. Typical triggers include separate logins for each channel, high registration abandonment rates, or an upcoming platform consolidation. In these situations, we begin with an analysis of the existing portals.
Passwordless login replaces passwords with passkeys, email-based sign-in links, or device biometrics. Passkeys are bound to the domain and are therefore resistant to phishing. Customers no longer need to remember passwords, and password resets – one of the most common support requests – are eliminated. We introduce passwordless login gradually alongside the existing login process so that no customer is locked out.
We rely on a platform developed and operated in Europe that is widely used by banks, insurers, and public authorities in German-speaking countries. It combines self-service registration, consent management, multi-factor authentication, and passwordless login with protection for web applications and interfaces – an advantage when addressing requirements arising from the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and DORA. We integrate existing platforms rather than replacing them. The selection is based on your requirements, not on our partner status.
